Study in Shanghai 上海

China's international business city on the coast.

Shanghai is China's largest city and its main business and finance centre. It is very international, with many multinational companies, a modern skyline and excellent public services. Leading universities here are strong in business, engineering, medicine and technology.

🌤 Weather & climate

Humid subtropical. Hot, humid summers with a rainy season in June–July; mild to cool winters that rarely freeze but feel damp. Typhoon rain can come in late summer.

💰 Cost of living

Usually the most expensive city in China for rent and eating out. Campus dorms and canteens are much cheaper than living off campus.

🍜 Food & halal options

Everything from street food to international restaurants. Halal restaurants (清真) and Lanzhou noodle shops are easy to find, and several mosques are in the city.

🚄 Getting around

One of the world's largest metro systems, plus buses and high-speed trains to Hangzhou, Nanjing and Suzhou in about 1–2 hours. Two airports (Pudong and Hongqiao).

💡 Tips for students in Shanghai

  • Rent near a metro line if you live off campus
  • Carry an umbrella — rain is frequent
  • Weekend trips to Hangzhou and Suzhou are cheap and fast by train
