What is the JW202 form and why do you need it for a Chinese student visa?
After your admission letter, the university sends a JW202 form. Without it you cannot apply for an X1 student visa. Here is how it works, step by step.
The JW201/JW202 form (Visa Application for Study in China) is issued by the university together with your admission letter. The Chinese embassy needs the original form to issue a student visa.
X1 or X2 visa?
- X1 — for study longer than 180 days (degree programs). You must apply for a residence permit within 30 days of arrival.
- X2 — for short programs up to 180 days, such as a one-semester language course.
The steps
- Receive your admission letter and JW202 (by courier).
- Prepare the visa form, photo, passport and physical examination record.
- Submit at the Chinese Visa Application Service Center.
- Collect your visa and book your flight.
Keep the JW202 and admission letter safe — you will show them again at the airport and at the university.
